SERIE A MATCH REPORT

Serie A Week 14 - 30 Nov 2013 (19.45 UK)
Genoa 1 - 1 Torino
El Kaddouri 8 (T), Biondini 69 (G)
Stadio Luigi Ferraris

Davide Biondini cancelled out an Omar El Kaddouri opener and Mattia Perin performed heroics as Genoa held Torino to a 1-1 draw.

The Grifone have been revived under Gian Piero Gasperini, earning 10 points in four rounds. Juraj Kucka recovered from injury with Tomas Manfredini suspended. Ciro Immobile faced his former club, though Danilo D’Ambrosio was banned with Marcelo Larrondo and Guillermo Rodriguez sidelined.

Toro hadn’t won a Serie A tie at Marassi since September 1981, managing seven draws and nine defeats in all competition.

After just 51 seconds Torino had rattled the frame of the goal, as Omar El Kaddouri’s angled drive ricocheted off the inside of the far post.

Immobile also tested Mattia Perin after a well-worked move and Toro took the deserved lead early on. A corner was not cleared effectively and Alexander Farnerud’s long-range effort took a huge deflection off El Kaddouri to beat Perin right into the far bottom corner.

Daniele Padelli smothered a Centurion attempt and Immobile blasted over, but it was mostly Toro and Alessio Cerci sprinted past his marker down the left, forcing Perin to parry with his legs at the near post.

An audacious Cesare Bovo strike from distance was fingertipped out from under the bar as it dipped viciously.

Francelino Matuzalem’s free kick bounced off the defensive wall and inches past the post, while Perin again parried from an Immobile counter-attack.

After the restart Cerci’s free kick was beaten away by Perin, then Genoa went extremely close with a Sime Vrsaljko screamer that swerved to thump the inside of the far post. During that move, goalkeeper Padelli aggravated some feelings of nausea he had been suffering in the first half and had to run off the pitch, giving 25-year-old Lys Gomis his Serie A debut.

Daniele Portanova fired towards goal from a free kick, but Kamil Glik got in a decisive block. Moments later Immobile burst past Portanova and his curler was fingertipped round the far post by Perin. The Genoa goalkeeper also pushed a Bovo free kick over the bar and Luca Antonini threw himself at Cerci’s feet to stop him shooting when clear on goal from 10 yards.

Second half substitute Ivan Fetfatzidis was crucial for Genoa’s equaliser. He surged forward from midfield and rolled through the pass for Davide Biondini, whose angled drive slotted into the far bottom corner.

It was still wide open and 60 seconds later Perin needed a miraculous double save on Cerci’s strike and the Immobile follow-up from point-blank range. Luca Antonini used his face to charge down a Farnerud scorcher and was left understandably dazed, while Alberto Gilardino’s toe-poke was parried in the box.

Emiliano Moretti ran a big risk with his clumsy tackle from behind on Emanuele Calaiò in the box, while Cerci and Bovo free kicks sailed over the bar. At the 94th minute Kucka gave the ball away in the final third, but Cerci fired wide as defenders crowded around him.
