Antonio Cassano’s 100th Serie A goal – a spectacular volley – was not enough as 10-man Bologna held Parma in the Emilia-Romagna Derby.
This fixture went to the Rossoblu last season, but they were without Jonathan Cristaldo and Alessandro Diamanti was only fit for the bench after suffering from flu over the last few days. The Ducali were fresh from a shock win away to Napoli and welcomed Gabriel Paletta into the starting XI for the first time this term. Walter Gargano and Aleandro Rosi sat out bans.
Rolando Bianchi just failed to get his toe to an Archimede Morleo free kick flicked on by Rene Krhin towards the back post.
Bologna had a bright start and took the lead after 10 minutes when Bianchi knocked down a long ball forward, Panagiotis Kone let it bounce and smacked in on the half-volley from 25 metres. It flew past Antonio Mirante to settle in at the near bottom corner.
Mirante got down to block a Bianchi strike, but Cassano went so close with a curling lob inches wide after good work from Marco Marchionni.
Cassano drew Parma level with a truly spectacular goal, officially his 100th in Serie A. He volleyed in a Nicola Sansone set piece yards with the inside of his right foot, flashing it across the face of goal from the near post into the far top corner. It was a magnificent effort.
Lazaros Christodoulopoulos went on a counter-attack and held off Massimo Gobbi, forcing Mirante to fingertip out from under the bar. The Parma goalkeeper was also tested by a Kone long-range strike.
Bologna went down to 10 men after the restart when Fredrik Sorensen received a second yellow card for tripping Sansone on the edge of the box. Ex-Bayern Munich youth product Sansone got back up to take the free kick, which whistled just wide.
Marchionni was booked for simulation when falling in the D, but there was some contact. Gianluca Curci turned a Mattia Cassani attempt away for a corner, but Cassano needed treatment for a cut to his eyebrow after colliding with teammate Sansone.
Sansone’s screamer was fingertipped out from under the bar, but 10-man Bologna also threatened to win it with a Kone free kick that shaved a coat of paint off the upright.
Curci smothered a Cassano shot and deep into stoppages plucked a Raffaele Palladino header out of the air. Krhin handled in the box, but it was ball-to-hand and considered involuntary. With the last move of the game, Amauri's looping header whistled wide.
Sent off: Sorensen 53 (B)
