Chievo continued their amazing transformation under Eugenio Corini, ending Sassuolo’s unbeaten run.
These two sides had disastrous starts to the season, but had considerably improved in recent weeks. Both were unbeaten in four Serie A rounds, though midweek Sassuolo lost in the Coppa Italia and Chievo swept through to the Round of 16. Eugenio Corini had won all three competitive games since taking over from Giuseppe Sannino.
Sassuolo had a great chance after 10 minutes when Domenico Berardi’s free kick into the six-yard box was cleared for a corner just before Luca Antei could tap in.
Marcelo Estigarribia ran on to a through ball and pounced on Francesco Acerbi’s error, but a last-gasp save forced a corner, then Gianluca Pegolo denied an Ivan Radovanovic screamer.
The fog started to descend on the Mapei Stadium in Reggio Emilia over the half-time break, making visibility very poor.
Nonetheless, Alessio Sestu still managed to get down the right and pull back for Cyril Thereau’s angled drive into the far bottom corner.
Estigarribia almost added a second, but couldn’t keep his finish on target from a tight angle after bursting past Antei.
Christian Puggioni needed quick reflexes to deny a Gaetano Masucci header.
