Atalanta snatched a last-gasp draw at Marassi to stall Genoa’s progress in an exciting mid-table clash.
The Grifone have been on sparkling form since Gian Piero Gasperini replaced Fabio Liverani, though that run was interrupted by last week’s controversial defeat to Cagliari. Thomas Manfredini was very harshly sent off in that tie and therefore suspended, missing out with the injured Daniele Portanova and Juraj Kucka. Senegalese 20-year-old Moussa Konate was given a surprise start in attack. Atalanta had lost three of their last five games and were without Cristian Raimondi, Mario Yepes, Gianpaolo Bellini and the banned Riccardo Cazzola.
The Orobici’s last Serie A victory at Marassi was in 1991-92 and an Alberto Gilardino volley forced Andrea Consigli into a desperate reaction save in the opening 90 seconds.
Genoa again went extremely close on 18 minutes, as Ivan Fetfatzidis whipped in a corner that Luca Antonelli met with a diving header, hitting the upright from point-blank range.
Giovanni Marchese threatened again from a set play, this time his header flashing across the face of goal to skim the back stick.
Mattia Perin came flying off his line to parry from German Denis after the Argentine had sprung the offside trap from a Maxi Moralez through ball to shoot from seven yards.
On the stroke of half-time, Atalanta had their best chance when Luca Cigarini’s right-foot effort thumped the outside of the post.
A set piece fell to Stefano Lucchini, who could only bundle the ball wide from six yards, while Denis blasted over.
Genoa took the lead when Gilardino knocked down a Marchese cross from the left for the on-rushing Andrea Bertolacci, whose left-foot strike flew past Consigli from just inside the area.
Giacomo Bonaventura’s wayward effort turned into an assist for Giuseppe De Luca, but Perin smothered at his feet.
Atalanta looked to be heading for their fifth consecutive away defeat until the 94th minute, when De Luca came sliding on to a cross from six yards to snatch a point at Marassi.
