Giuseppe Rossi left it very late indeed to give Fiorentina the victory away to Sassuolo, his 14th goal of the season.
The Viola wanted to end 2013 on a high and with Giuseppe Rossi topping the Capocannoniere charts. Juan Guillermo Cuadrado sat out a ban with Mario Gomez and Gonzalo Rodriguez sidelined, so Josip Ilicic got a rare start. Sassuolo had one point from their last three games and were crushed 4-0 by Juventus last week. Francesco Magnanelli was suspended and Domenico Berardi returned from his ban, but all thoughts were with Francesco Acerbi, who discovered his cancer has returned.
Berardi tested Neto in the opening minutes and Simone Zaza nodded over. Fiorentina struggled to make an impact without Cuadrado and Josip Ilicic finished a promising run down the right by firing straight at the goalkeeper.
Sassuolo had the better of the first half, as Marvin Compper was crucial in intercepting several very dangerous through balls. A corner was whipped in and Manuel Pasqual charged down Luca Marrone’s effort.
Neto needed a fine reaction save to parry Zaza’s shot at the near post and Giuseppe Rossi blasted off target when anticipating Luca Antei to an Ilicic cross. Neto ran a few risks in goal when he dribbled the ball away from Reto Ziegler with great difficulty on an Alberto Aquilani back pass.
Borja Valero wasted a golden opportunity when Lino Marzorati gave away the ball as he tried to intercept Ilicic, as the Spaniard only hit the side-netting.
Giuseppe Rossi thought he had scored with one of his trademark curlers, but Gianluca Pegolo flew for a sensational one-handed save.
It was only a warning, as soon after Rossi smashed a low drive into the near bottom corner from the edge of the box to give Fiorentina the lead.
Ilicic had the chance to secure the points, but on the counter-attack he only hit the upright when faced with an open goal.
