Cagliari were extremely unlucky in Bergamo, hitting the woodwork three times only to lose 1-0 against Atalanta.
This was a relegation tussle in Bergamo with the teams level on 21 points and both sides had some reshuffling to do. The hosts had Yohan Benalouane banned along with the injured Andrea Consigli – who has chicken pox – Giampaolo Bellini, Carlos Carmona and Lionel Scaloni. Their mood was shaken somewhat midweek by a chaotic Coppa Italia defeat to Napoli. Cagliari had star striker Mauricio Pinilla suspended and Nene sidelined, so Victor Ibarbo had to take over as centre-forward.
The Sardinians had not conquered the Stadio Azzurri d’Italia in Serie A since 1991-92. Victor Ibarbo had a sensational scoring opportunity after seven minutes when he unleashed a screamer from 20 metres that bounced off the inside of the post to go back out.
Colombian hitman Ibarbo incredibly struck the same upright again soon after, a rising strike that clipped the outside of the near stick.
Cagliari were extremely unlucky, hitting the frame of the goal for a third time with Daniele Conti’s free kick just clipping the woodwork.
Jack Bonaventura aimed a free header straight at the goalkeeper after the restart and he eventually broke the deadlock.
Franco Brienza’s cross was whipped in from the right and Maxi Moralez missed it, but the ball carried on for Bonaventura at full stretch at the back post.
The tension got to Ibarbo, who received a straight red card for lashing out an elbow at Cristian Raimondi.
Sent off: Ibarbo 92 (C)
