Roma thrashed Parma 4-2 in a tie originally rained off in February and closed the gap on Juventus to just eight points.
This Week 22 tie was rained off on February 2 and resumed where it left off, at the eighth minute with a Ducali throw-in. Kevin Strootman and Federico Balzaretti were injured with Radja Nainggolan suspended, while the visitors missed Antonio Cassano, Gabriel Paletta, Walter Gargano, Nicola Pozzi and the banned Dias Felipe. It meant Cristian Molinaro became a makeshift centre-back.
Within 90 seconds of the restart Parma had gone very close, as Afriyie Acquah’s effort was deflected and Ezequiel Schelotto nodded the rebound over. Moments later Douglas Maicon stung Antonio Mirante’s gloves with a fierce shot.
Roma took the lead when Mattia Destro sprung the offside trap on Francesco Totti’s slide-rule pass and his angled drive hit the post, but Gervinho was ready to tap in from a yard.
Gervinho thought he had bagged a brace in the space of two minutes, but his stunning volley was correctly flagged offside.
Instead, Parma drew level with Acquah’s first goal of the season. He chested down Massimo Gobbi’s cross on the penalty spot, spun round and fired low into the near bottom corner to surprise Morgan De Sanctis.
The Ducali had barely finished celebrating when Totti restored Roma’s advantage, blasting under the bar from just inside the box. It was his 20th career goal against Parma.
Destro had the ball in the net again, but was offside, while he side-footed a different opportunity wide after straying beyond the line.
Marco Marchionni’s free kick from the very edge of the box was charged down, while Mehdi Benatia crucially blocked off an Amauri effort.
Maicon trapped a Totti cross-field pass and put it into the centre for Destro’s header, which cannoned off the crossbar on 41 minutes.
After the restart Roma added a third, as Miralem Pjanic found the best way to celebrate his 24th birthday. Gervinho surged into the box and saw his shot charged down by Alessandro Lucarelli, but then smartly pulled back when he saw Pjanic running in behind to fire in the rebound. It was the Bosnian’s fifth of the season, setting a new personal best.
Totti’s snapshot was beaten away by Mirante and Destro ballooned the follow-up over the bar. Gervinho tried to dribble past the last Parma man, but the touch was heavy and allowed Mirante to recover.
There was a fine Roma move as Maicon crossed for Alessandro Florenzi’s volleyed pass, but Rodrigo Taddei came sliding in just a second too late to get the finish from five yards.
Molinaro crucially intercepted an assist for Pjanic, but from the resulting corner Taddei got a glancing header at the near post. It was his first in a Roma jersey since 2011.
Parma weren’t done for yet and Jonathan Biabiany got their second with a well-placed finish into the far top corner from the edge of the box.
