Roma ended the season with a third consecutive defeat, as Greece international Yoannis Fetfatzidis gave Genoa victory.
The Giallorossi were hoping to extend their club record number of points for a single Serie A season, although Rudi Garcia was forced into numerous changes. Miralem Pjanic, Gervinho, Morgan De Sanctis, Daniele De Rossi, Alessio Romagnoli, Vasilis Torosidis, Rafael Toloi, Federico Balzaretti and Kevin Strootman were all unavailable, so Tin Jedvaj and Federico Ricci received their maiden Serie A starts. Genoa had Alberto Gilardino and Luca Antonelli suspended, plus Francelino Matuzalem, Alessandro Gamberini, Isaac Cofie, Paolo De Ceglie and Andrea Bertolacci injured. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side had just one win from the previous 11 rounds.
Genoa went close with Giovanni Marchese’s header from point-blank range on a Giuseppe Sculli cross, forcing a fine save out of Lukasz Skorupski.
Mattia Destro’s diving header was spectacularly parried by Mattia Perin with one hand from five yards, but the striker was offside anyway on Adem Ljajic’s free kick.
Moments later Destro tried again with a volleyed assist for Ljajic, which was intercepted and only desperate defending stopped Ricci netting on his first Serie A start. Perin was called into action once more on a fierce Ljajic right-foot strike and smothered the Destro low drive.
Michel Bastos drilled just over and Mazzitelli made his Serie A debut for Roma. Precious little occurred in the second half, as it was a classic end of season game.
However, Genoa pulled a surprise out of the hat with seven minutes to go. Substitute Yoannis Fetfatzidis sprung the offside trap on a through ball – which looked to come off a Roma player – and kept his cool to delicately chip the on-rushing goalkeeper.
Moments later Genoa went on a rapid counter and Skorupski performed a crucial save on Moussa Konate at the near post.
