SERIE A MATCH REPORT

Serie A Week 37 - 8 May 2016 (14.00 UK)
1 - 3 Lazio
Bisevac 23 (L), Candreva 32 (L), Klose 73 (L), Mbakogu 84 (C)

Carpi dropped into the relegation zone after this chaotic defeat to nine-man Lazio, as Jerry Mbakogu wasted two penalties.

The hosts were desperate for points in their final home game of the season to avoid relegation, having been caught by Palermo last week. Fabrizio Castori had practically a full squad to choose from, but Simone Inzaghi missed Keita Balde Diao and Santiago Gentiletti through suspension. Also injured were Stefan Radu, Alessandro Matri, Ricardo Kishna, Etrit Berisha and Stefan De Vrij.

These sides had met only once before, a 0-0 at the Olimpico on January 6. Lazio had early penalty appeals when Riccardo Gagliolo charged down an Antonio Candreva volley with his hand, but his back was turned to the player.

At the other end Carpi were awarded an extremely soft spot-kick when Jerry Mbakogu pinched the ball off Wesley Hoedt and then seemed to run into the defender. Mbakogu stepped up, but saw his penalty beaten away by Federico Marchetti.

It was a chaotic start to the game, as Hoedt went off injured and moments later Senad Lulic’s strike bounced off both the crossbar and the upright in a bizarre ricochet.

Lazio did take the lead when Raffaele Bianco performed two goal-line clearances on Marco Parolo, but could do nothing on Milan Bisevac’s follow-up.

The Carpi offside trap failed when Felipe Anderson was able to roll across for the unmarked Candreva at the back post.

Mauricio handled the ball when trying to mark Mbakogu for a second Carpi penalty. Mbakogu stepped up again, but for the second time in half an hour he was denied by Marchetti. If anything, this spot-kick was even worse than the first.

Carpi came out fighting for the second half and substitute Kevin Lasagna made an immediate impact, his scorching strike thumping the crossbar after Marchetti flapped at a cross-shot.

The hosts kept pushing and Lasagna blasted over before Marchetti smothered the Lorenzo Lollo effort, then the goalkeeper flapped at a cross and Carpi were unable to make the most of the situation.

Lazio completed the rout with Miroslav Klose, who hit a half-volley on Eddy Onazi’s bouncing cross thanks to some slack defending.

Lasagna was the last to give in and his counter was deflected just wide, but Carpi were given hope in the final minutes.

First Lucas Biglia was sent off for a second bookable offence, then a Simone Verdi free kick bounced off the bar for Mbakogu to turn in the rebound.

Carpi tried everything in the closing stages, but Marchetti kept out Verdi and Gagliolo hit the side-netting.

Lazio went down to nine men after a foolish Filip Djordjevic reaction foul, shoving Gaetano Letizia in the neck and face.
