Ciro Immobile snatched a last-gasp Lazio winner after Lucas Biglia missed a penalty, but Crotone saw a goal controversially disallowed.
Simone Inzaghi was forced into several changes to start 2017, as Felipe Anderson and Senad Lulic were suspended with Keita Balde Diao at the Africa Cup of Nations, Filip Djordjevic and Jordan Lukaku injured. It meant Luis Alberto got his first Serie A start with youth team forward Cristiano Lombardi. Crotone were finally finding their feet towards Christmas, but went to the Olimpico without Aleksandar Tonev and banned goalkeeper Alex Cordaz, so Marco Festa made his third appearance of the season.
Lazio took a while to get into gear and had the ball in the back of the net when Cristiano Lombardo met Luis Alberto’s long cross at the back post, but the goal was ruled offside. It was an incredibly tight decision, a matter of inches if his toe was indeed over.
Ciro Immobile’s angled drive was heading for the far bottom corner until Festa got his fingertips to it with a crucial save.
The pressure paid off with a penalty when Adrian Stoian tripped Lombardi right on the line, but Lucas Biglia smashed his spot-kick against the crossbar and the chance went begging.
Moments later, Luis Alberto was again impressive on his first Serie A start, setting up Marco Parolo to test Festa’s legs.
Federico Marchetti needed a sensational reaction save on Crotone’s only real chance of the first half, beating away a Diego Falcinelli volley from close range.
Festa flew to fingertip another Parolo volley out from under the bar, while after the restart Stefan de Vrij nodded the Biglia corner off target.
Crotone were understandably furious on 70 minutes when Marcus Rohden put the ball in the net, catching Lazio on the counter, but the linesman disallowed it for an incorrect offside decision. He seemed to be level with the Aquile defensive line.
Ricardo Kishna’s audacious trivela cross-shot tested Festa, but the Crotone goalkeeper got down quick and strong for a sensational save on Immobile’s screamer.
Lazio and Immobile finally found a way through when Bruno Martella’s ricochet accidentally set up the striker in the final minute.
Missed penalty: Biglia 30 (L)
