Stevan Jovetic, Alessandro Gamberini and Santiago Silva sank an ill-disciplined Roma side that ended the game with eight men.
These two sides were struggling this season and came head-to-head under pressure. Delio Rossi was still without a Serie A victory since replacing Sinisa Mihajlovic and lost Alessio Cerci to injury, but welcomed Stevan Jovetic back after his thigh strain in the Euro 2012 qualifiers. Luis Enrique reshuffled Roma once again, as Francesco Totti returned only for the bench, while Pablo Daniel Osvaldo was suspended and fined €50,000 for punching teammate Erik Lamela in a locker-room brawl.
There was a minute’s applause before kick-off and Fiorentina wore black armbands after their 1984-85 Brazilian legend Socrates died last night, aged 57.
Fernando Gago’s long-range effort landed on the roof of the net, while Maarten Stekelenburg needed two touches to get a Jovetic snapshot under control.
The referee marked the turning point after 15 minutes by awarding a penalty and red card for Juan’s obvious shirt-tug on Jovetic, after the Montenegrin’s delightful flick to go round the defender from nine yards. Jovetic got back up to coolly convert low into the near bottom corner and put Fiorentina in front against 10-man Roma.
The Giallorossi did not lose heart, as Daniele De Rossi drilled just wide, but a fierce Jovetic solo effort that nutmegged De Rossi stung Stekelenburg’s palms.
Roma still managed a period of sustained pressure with four corners in quick succession, but as always struggled to create actual chances.
However, just as the Giallorossi were pushing hard, they conceded a second from a Riccardo Montolivo corner and soaring Alessandro Gamberini header.
In first half stoppages Alberto Gilardino’s shot on the volley soared over on the counter-attack.
Lamela’s long-range effort was comfortably saved and Gabriel Heinze charged down Lazzari’s shot, then De Rossi rushed back to deflect a Jovetic counter out for a corner.
Gamberini knocked down a set play for Lazzari’s angled drive across the face of goal. Roma lost their temper completely in the final stages, as Gago received a second yellow card for his late sliding tackle on Jovetic, reducing the Giallorossi to nine men.
In a moment of sheer idiocy, Bojan Krkic got himself sent off for clearly palming a Nastasic volley off the line. He raised his arms above his head for this save, so couldn’t escape Roma’s third red card of the game, and the young Spaniard howled his frustration as he walked off. This time Santiago Silva converted under the bar.
Sent off: Juan 15 (R), Gago 77 (R), Bojan 85 (R)
