Novara kept their first clean sheet of the whole season, picking up a point at home to Cagliari.
New Novara Coach Emiliano Mondonico saw his debut ruined midweek with a home defeat to Chievo. Cagliari were in far more celebratory mood, having thrashed Roma 4-2 on Wednesday night. The hosts were without Achille Coser, Francesco Marianini, Taka Morimoto, Carlalberto Ludi and the suspended Ivan Radovanovic. The Sardinians missed Rui Sampaio, Nene, Sebastian Eriksson and more crucially had Andrea Cossu on a ban. Albin Ekdal stepped into the trequartista’s shoes.
Giuseppe Mascara was furious when he was halted clear on goal from Marco Rigoni’s pass for an incorrect offside decision. Andrea Caracciolo got the ball in the back of the net, but the goal was disallowed for a push on ‘keeper Michael Agazzi.
Mascara jumped higher than the crowd to reach Simone Pesce’s cross from the left, but could not keep his header on target.
After the restart Mauricio Pinilla went through two defenders in the penalty area, but was looking for the contact, so the referee waved play on.
Thiago Ribeiro misplaced his assist for Radja Nainggolan, while Rigoni and Caracciolo just failed to make contact with Pesce’s cross.
Andrea Lisuzzo’s header was practically a goalline clearance to keep out Daniele Conti’s strike, while Caracciolo again only skimmed a Giuseppe Gemiti assist.
