Fabrizio Miccoli and Igor Budan could’ve had many more goals against 10-man Atalanta, but Giorgio Frezzolini performed heroics in Palermo’s 2-1 win.
Bortolo Mutti said this was like his “personal derby,” having two spells on the Atalanta bench in his career. The Rosanero were without Abel Hernandez, Giulio Migliaccio, Della Rocca and Armin Bacinovic, but were fresh from two wins and a thrilling midweek 4-4 draw at Inter. Atalanta ended a run of three consecutive defeats with their 1-0 at Cesena, but Wednesday’s game with Genoa was snowed off. That meant German Denis still had to sit out his ban, joined by the injured Frezzolini, Bellini and Capelli.
Massimo Donati threatened against his former club, an early glancing header from Fabrizio Miccoli’s cross flashing past the far post. Donati threatened again in identical fashion.
Miccoli sprung the offside trap through the middle and was tripped by Andrea Consigli for an inevitable penalty and red card. Simone Tiribocchi made way for substitute goalkeeper Giorgio Frezzolini, whose first touch was pulling Miccoli’s ball out of the net.
Miccoli thought he had scored a sensational second with a volley as the ball dropped over his shoulder, but Frezzolini denied him with an equally stunning reaction save.
Frezzolini was in amazing form, as the substitute again flew to palm a Miccoli free kick out from under the bar. Matias Silvestre tapped in for a second, but the goal was incorrectly ruled offside.
Palermo did get their second eventually, as Frezzolini performed two desperate saves on Miccoli’s header and the Igor Budan follow-up from point-blank range, but could do nothing as Budan volleyed in at the third attempt.
It was one-way traffic against 10-man Atalanta, as in the space of 30 seconds there were three scoring opportunities, including Silvestre hitting the post and desperate clearances.
However, Maxi Moralez scored against the run of play. Manolo Gabbiadini robbed Silvestre and pulled back from the by-line for Moralez to come sliding in undisturbed.
Just 20 seconds later Nicolas Bertolo’s screamer was fingertipped on to the underside of the bar and bounced back out, as Frezzolini was single-handedly keeping the Orobici in this game.
Sent off: Consigli 27 (A)
