Atalanta threw everything they had at Lecce, but rattled the woodwork twice and could only manage a point from this head-to-head.
This was a relegation dogfight in Bergamo in with every point counted double. Atalanta had Andrea Consigli and Luca Cigarini out on bans, joining the injured Giampaolo Bellini, Simone Bonaventura, Daniele Capelli, Simone Tiribocchi and Ferri. Ciro Polito therefore took over the goalkeeping gloves and they switched to a 3-4-1-2 system. Lecce had Moris Carrozzieri suspended, while Massimiliano Benassi, Carlos Grossmuller and Edward Ofere were out of action. Valeri Bojinov had his first start since completing the loan from Sporting Lisbon.
Fortunately, the snow had stopped in Bergamo and allowed play to go ahead without problems. Julio Sergio plucked a Federico Peluso cross off the head of Guido Marilungo, while Carmona blasted over from distance.
Atalanta went so close to an opener on 21 minutes when Massimo Oddo accidentally gave the ball away, but the Marilungo angled drive squirmed past Julio Sergio to crack against the base of the far post.
Another Ezequiel Schelotto pass rolled all the way across the goal only for Peluso to hit the upright from point-blank range.
Lecce’s first real attempt after 26 minutes saw David Di Michele drill wide, but Atalanta continued to dominate and a German Denis strike was deflected on to the roof of the net off Brivio.
Juan Cuadrado’s mazy run was cut short as defensive bodies blocked his shot in the box. Straight after the restart, an audacious Bojinov overhead kick was not far off the target.
Andrea Esposito asked for a substitution, so Lecce had to introduce Di Matteo, moving Brivio back as a makeshift defender.
Miglionico needed to anticipate a Denis header, then Manuele Blasi pounced to stop Marilungo tapping in, as Atalanta’s attacks became increasingly chaotic. Denis horribly wasted a great chance for Manolo Gabbiadini by triggering the offside trap when he should’ve steered clear.
Denis wanted a penalty for a Blasi nudge from behind, but the referee awarded only a corner. Julio Sergio again kept Lecce in it with a fine save on Gabbiadini’s free kick.
