Chievo caused a big upset by conquering Genoa in their Marassi stronghold, as Cyril Thereau got the decider.
Pasquale Marino’s men are a Jekyll and Hyde team at the moment, losing four straight away matches and winning their last three at Marassi. Alberto Gilardino, Luca Antonelli, Giandomenico Mesto, Cesare Bovo and Emiliano Moretti missed out on this match. Chievo were without Paolo Sammarco for the trip.
Cruzado’s cross found Cyril Thereau, who should’ve done better with his header. Stefano Sorrentino rushed off his line to smother at Giuseppe Sculli’s feet.
Chievo took the lead with a classic counter-attack, as Sergio Pellissier got to the by-line and pulled back for Thereau’s angled daisy-cutter.
Sebastien Frey flew to palm a Cruzado left-foot screamer out from under the bar as it dipped viciously.
Sorrentino was also tested, pushing Sculli’s downward header off the line from a corner. In the second half Juraj Kucka’s header from a free kick looped across the face of goal to skim the far post.
Bosko Jankovic burst between defenders to sprint clear and Sorrentino’s stunning one-handed save turned the strike over the bar in their one-on-one.
Nicolas Frey came off the bench, so both brothers were on the Marassi pitch playing for opposing teams. Sebastien Frey had to be at full stretch to flap a Vacek curler out from the far top corner with one hand.
Belluschi blasted wide from the D and Palacio turned over in stoppages.
