Fabio Borini is on loan from Parma, but he got the winning goal for Roma against the team that owns his contract.
The Giallorossi were going through a very inconsistent period of form, as they alternated home victories over Inter with defeats away to Cagliari and Siena. Simon Kjaer sat out a ban, while Nicolas Andre Burdisso is out for the rest of the season, but Fabio Borini and Pablo Daniel Osvaldo started by sending Erik Lamela surprisingly to the bench. Parma were fresh from holding Juventus to a goalless draw midweek and opted for Raffaele Palladino as partner to Sebastian Giovinco.
Parma had a bright start, as Palladino’s cross-shot flashed across the face of goal with Giovinco and Stefano Morrone unable to get the final touch as Juan put it out for a corner. Roma had penalty appeals for Cristian Zaccardo’s coming together with Francesco Totti. There were further protests as Ferrario charged down a Rodrigo Taddei effort with his hand, but several Giallorossi players were offside, so play resumed with a free kick.
Roma broke through with Parma-owned striker Borini, who burst down the right and placed his angled drive across Antonio Mirante into the far bottom corner.
Osvaldo just failed to get the final touch to a Borini cross-shot, while Mirante smothered the Miralem Pjanic long-range attempt.
The Ducali had to substitute Palladino due to a thigh problem, so Okaka came on against the team that still owns his contract.
Mirante needed a crucial save at the start of the second half, at full stretch palming the Borini pass away from Osvaldo, who would’ve just tapped into an empty net from six yards.
Parma immediately went on the counter and Okaka went clear, forcing Maarten Stekelenburg to parry with his body. The Giallorossi goalkeeper also had to rush off his line to close down Giovinco.
Totti had the chance to double Roma’s lead, but his lob was over the bar from close range off the outside of his right foot.
Aleandro Rosi went on the counter-attack and had no real support, so went for goal himself and forced Mirante into a tricky reaction save. Ferrario charged down a Totti attempt from the edge of the box.
A smart Fernando Gago pass sent Rosi down the right, but the shot flashed across Mirante and the far post.
Marquinho made his debut for the final 10 minutes, as the Brazilian arrived during the January transfer window.
Lamela should’ve secured a 2-0 result in stoppages, but fired straight at Mirante, who also parried the Taddei follow-up. The Parma goalkeeper also used his legs to parry from Marquinho at the base of the near post.
