Catania made short work of Novara and broke further away from the drop zone, as Giovanni Marchese scored one of the goals of the season.

The Elefantini have dragged themselves comfortably mid-table, but Novara continue to battle in the relegation zone. Simone Pesce sat out a ban, so was unable to visit his former club, joining the injured Carlalberto Ludi, Francesco Marianini, Taka Morimoto and Daniel Jensen. Catania had to do without Andrea Campagnolo, Ciro Capuano, David Suazo and Alessandro Potenza.

Andrea Lisuzzo risked an own goal with his wayward defensive header, but Marco Motta knew where he was trying to shoot and his blockbuster from distance was well blocked on the line by Samir Ujkani.

Gonzalo Bergessio and Felipe Seymour smashed just over the bar until eventually Catania did break through.

Bergessio got the opening goal on the half-hour mark, as Francesco Lodi chipped a ball over the top for Pablo Barrientos, who sprung the offside trap and rolled across for the Bergessio tap-in from six yards.

A Sergio Almiron free kick skimmed the woodwork and Novara had their first real attempt after 36 minutes when Rigoni’s snapshot was just over from the edge of the box.

Rigoni threatened again, as he only skimmed the cross after Andrea Caracciolo’s dummy. After the restart, Paolo Hernan Dellafiore’s interception prevented a certain Catania goal, stopping the cross from reaching Bergessio. From the corner, Bergessio volleyed at the back post, but hit goalkeeper Ujkani in the face.

Yet another corner and Catania scored an absolutely magnificent goal! Marchese hit a spectacular volley from outside the box that was so powerful it left Ujkani rooted to the spot. It was truly a fantastic finish.

Andrea Mazzarani came off the bench and 30 seconds later saw his angled drive ricochet off the base of the far upright.

Alejandro Gomez made it 3-0 for a commanding Catania. He captured a long cross-field pass down the left flank and cut in to place a daisy-cutter into the far bottom corner.

Barrientos tested Ujkani from close range and Juan Pablo Carrizo palmed an Andrea Caracciolo effort over the bar.

Novara did get a goal back in the final minutes, as Rigoni rolled across for Raffaele Rubino to tap in from six yards.
