Novara caused another huge upset, as they earned a 2-0 victory away to Siena, confirming Attilio Tesser’s return has boosted their confidence.

Giuseppe Sannino warned this would be a “true relegation battle” as Novara were trying to climb back out of the drop zone following the return of Coach Tesser and their victory over Udinese. Siena also boosted their chances of survival in last week’s 2-0 win at Cesena.

Robur are without top scorer Emanuele Calaio for the rest of the season after he fractured his shin, joining Francesco Bolzoni, Gaetano D’Agostino and Matteo Contini on the treatment table. Carlalberto Ludi and Francesco Marianini missed out for the visitors.

Franco Brienza pounced on a Michele Morganella error only to flash his half-volley across the face of goal.

Pablo Gonzalez had a solo run deflected just wide of the near post, but the officials did not see the touch and awarded a goal kick.

Siena Coach Sannino provided some entertainment on the touchline with a spectacular scorpion kick to put the ball back into play.

Novara really should’ve scored, as the ball was pulled back across the face of goal to the edge of the six-yard box, where Giuseppe Mascara only prodded it, forcing a fine reaction save at full stretch from Gianluca Pegolo.

Simone Pesce’s left-foot strike from distance also tested Pegolo and after the break Brienza’s powerful free kick was charged down by the wall.

Novara were extremely unlucky on 51 minutes, as a corner fell to Jeda for a brilliant volley that ricocheted off the underside of the bar and bounced back out, where Andrea Lisuzzo’s header was off target.

Marco Rigoni’s free kick flashed across the face of goal to skim the woodwork, which was a warning as Novara took the lead soon after.

Andrea Caracciolo knocked down a long ball for Rigoni, who let it bounce on the edge of the box and smashed a fantastic half-volley into the far bottom corner.

Novara doubled their advantage with an almost identical goal. Caracciolo again knocked down a cross with his chest and Filippo Porcari immediately hit a powerful volley across a helpless Pegolo.
