Giuseppe Mascara completed Novara’s comeback to take a point off Genoa in this chaotic encounter on Alberto Malesani's comeback.
Both clubs have sacked their Coaches only to recall them a few weeks later this season. Attilio Tesser had certainly improved Novara’s fortunes since returning and now Malesani hoped to do the same by coming in for Pasquale Marino.
Fernando Belluschi sat out a ban along with the injured Luca Antontelli and Kevin Constant, as Genoa tried to recover from their 5-4 defeat to Inter. Samir Ujkani’s season was over after fracturing his hand, joining Carlalberto Ludi, Francesco Marianini, Massimo Paci and Da Silva on the treatment table.
Genoa broke the deadlock almost immediately when Emiliano Moretti got to the by-line and pulled back for Rodrigo Palacio from six yards, but it took a decisive deflection practically on the line off Rossi. Novara complained that it was offside, but replays show he was kept in play.
Andrea Caracciolo skipped past Giandomenico Mesto only to have his shot parried by Sebastien Frey at the near post. Novara went close again, but Caracciolo misplaced his pass in for Rigoni, while Frey parried a Giuseppe Gemiti strike.
On 35 minutes Jeda’s header from a Caracciolo cross whistled just wide of the far post. Caracciolo also just failed to get on the end of a Gemiti cross from a very dangerous position.
Novara’s pressure finally paid off on 68 minutes when Gemiti’s cross was punched away to the edge of the box for a Giuseppe Mascara half-volley that smashed past a helpless Frey. Mascara had only been on the pitch for five minutes.
Genoa fought back and moments later Palacio exchanged passes with Rossi for a strike that cracked against the outside of the crossbar.
Novara went down to 10 men in stoppages when Caracciolo was shown a straight red card for a foul from behind.
Sent off: Caracciolo 90 (N)
