Atalanta mathematically secured their Serie A safety with this comfortable win, but Fiorentina saw a penalty saved.
Delio Rossi returned to face one of his former clubs, but above all seeking points to ensure the Viola’s safety. Artur Boruc was suspended, joining the injured Amauri, Juan Manuel Vargas, Riccardo Montolivo, Alessio Cerci, Alessandro Gamberini and Per Kroldrup. It meant Brazilian goalkeeper Neto got his debut Serie A start. The Orobici were practically safe already on 43 points, but had Guglielmo Stendardo and Luca Cigarini sitting out bans.
An early Giampaolo Bellini cross-shot clipped the crossbar, but it was German Denis who broke the deadlock at the 11th minute. A ball over the top allowed Denis to spring the offside trap and nod in totally undisturbed at the back post.
Mattia Cassani was prevented from getting on the end of a dangerous cross from point-blank range by Federico Peluso, while a Stevan Jovetic daisy-cutter was off target. Andrea Consigli rushed off his line to smother a Nastasic assist at Jovetic’s feet.
A Jovetic-Ljajic one-two went begging and Consigli smothered a deflected effort from the Montenegro international.
Valon Behrami hurt his shoulder during a bad fall in the first half and was unable to continue, so made way for Salifu.
Atalanta doubled their lead when a series of shots were charged down from Denis and Maxi Moralez before Simone Bonaventura swung his boot on the loose ball from the penalty spot.
The Maxi Moralez chip from a tight angle was looping over Neto, but cleared practically off the line by Nastasic.
Fiorentina were given a way back into the game for Cristiano Raimondi’s shirt tug on Acosty. However, Jovetic stepped up and his penalty was well saved by Consigli.
Acosty’s header whistled wide and Neto needed a fine save to deny Denis, but the Viola’s fightback dissipated with that missed penalty.
Saved penalty: Jovetic 67 (F)
