BENEVENTO HISTORY

Benevento were founded in 1929, but didn’t experience Serie B until 2016 and within one season had earned their first ever promotion into Serie A. No club had previously managed this double debut bounce in Italian football. It’s even more extraordinary considering they had gone bankrupt in 2005.

Brothers Ciro and Oreste Vigorito bought the side in March 2006 and transformed their fortunes with the biggest transfer campaign in this tiny club’s history. General manager Ciro Vigorito died in October 2010 and the stadium was named in his memory just seven days later.

Benevento earned their first promotion into Serie B in 2016 and immediately passed on to the main stage thanks to a 1-0 aggregate victory over Perugia in the play-off final. George Puscas scored the decisive goal and has extended his loan spell from Inter.

The club nickname is Le Streghe (The Witches) or Gli Stregoni (The Witch Doctors) due to the history of this city and its Pagan rituals in the Sabato river. Benevento are the fourth club from the Campania region to play in Serie A after Napoli, Salernitana and Avellino.
