Francesco Totti feels he ‘can say what he wants’ following his recent comments on Paulo Dybala and underlined how he’d ‘never say no’ to Roma despite their lack of an offer to return.

The former Italy forward sparked controversy amongst Giallorossi fans recently when he complained about Dybala’s injury struggles and lack of consistent playing time, suggesting that he’s only available for ’15 games a year’. His comments immediately divided supporters and kickstarted debates.

Dybala was predictably unimpressed with Totti’s statement but responded professionally, keeping quiet and working on his recovery ahead of the business end of the season. This season, the Argentine star has seen almost 2000 minutes of action across 28 matches, scoring 14 goals.

Speaking to Sport Mediaset, Totti first discussed the strong start of Daniele De Rossi in the Roma dugout.

“I didn’t expect it, but I hoped for it. De Rossi is a serious and thoughtful person. What he is doing is truly great and I hope he can do it for a long time to come.”

He was asked about the controversy surrounding his comments on Dybala’s fitness.

“I’m not a director of Roma, Inter or Juve. I’m a football fan, Roma in this case. I can say what I want, what I think I say. I expressed this not against Dybala, I’ve always defended him and for me he is the strongest player technically in the team. When he’s missing you can feel it.

“They asked me a question, if I were a director. And I said I would think about it, because if he plays 50% of the games in two years, I would think about that. Then if they want to make things bigger, so be it. I have nothing against Dybala, I was one of the first to bring him to Rome.”

The former forward reflected on Jose Mourinho’s time in charge of Roma.

“I’ll always speak well of Mourinho, together with Ancelotti he’s the one who has won the most trophies and one of the greatest ever. We just have to thank him for what he gave us, for the two finals. Thank you Mou for coaching Roma.”

Totti was asked if he’d like to be a coach like De Rossi.

“No, it’s not on my mind honestly.”

He was also asked about a possible return to Roma.

“Not with these owners, if they had wanted me, they would’ve found me. If one day they come, so be it, I’d never say no to Roma. If the time is right, I’ll return. It doesn’t depend on me, there’s no point always asking me.”

Finally, Totti gave his thoughts on the Italy national team and their coming Euro 2024 campaign.

“I know the coach and I know what desire he has and what spirit he can convey to the players. They could get to the final and he’ll try to make a great impression.

“He calls upon many talents, there isn’t one in particular that I can mention. Spalletti’s strength is the group, he always gives you a strong impression.”
