Formed in 1940 the Seahorses made steady progress up the League structure, reaching Serie B in 1968 and then Serie A for the first time in 1973. The mid-1970s were a golden era for the side as they maintained their place in Serie A and even qualified for Europe for the 1976-77 season – although they went out 4-3 on aggregate to Hungarians Magdeburg in their first game.

Unfortunately they were relegated the following year and have had only intermittent flirtations with the top tier since, two promotions in the 1980s eventually ended with relegation in 1991. Since then they have stumbled down as far as Serie C1 on several occasions.

However, under the guidance of Pierpaolo Bisoli the club enjoyed back-to-back promotion campaigns, travelling from the Third Division to the top in just two years.
