Sandro Tonali has been charged by the English FA for misconduct after placing 50 bets during his time with Newcastle, so will he be handed a new ban?

The 23-year-old Italian midfielder has been banned since October 27, 2023, following an investigation by the FIGC regarding his gambling activities during his time with Milan and Brescia. He was given a 10-month suspension as a result, keeping him out of action until August 27, 2024.

Today, the English FA released a statement that confirmed that Tonali had ‘been charged with misconduct in relation to alleged breaches of The FA’s Betting Rules’ for allegedly placing 50 bots on football matches between August 12, 2023, and October 12, 2023.

Will Tonali face a new ban?

Newcastle United do not expect Tonali to serve a further suspension following the FA’s charges, journalist Luke Edwards reports. The Italian midfielder had already admitted to placing these bets when questioned back in October, so any further penalties are expected to run concurrently.

The English FA also reportedly consider the 10-month worldwide ban handed to the Newcastle midfielder to be punishment for his bets in both England and Italy, and as such aren’t set to keep him sidelined past August 27, 2024.
