Paolo Maldini responded to Paolo Scaroni after the Milan president’s recent bittersweet message, challenging suggestions of bitterness.

The legendary former defender, who spent his entire 24-year playing career with the Rossoneri, worked as part of the club’s backroom staff from 2018 to last year, when he was unexpectedly dismissed by new owner Gerry Cardinale in a short meeting at the start of the summer.

The dismissal of Maldini did not go down well amongst fans, with many furious at the decision to remove a key figure tied to the Milan history and others concerned about the direction of the club under the American ownership, with some fearing a focus on finances over results.

Maldini responds

On Wednesday, Milan president Scaroni was asked if he’d spoken to Maldini recently following the former defender’s exit last year. His response was definitive: “I haven’t heard from him. When somebody looks at the past with bitterness, it means that he’s not living the present too well.”

Via Corriere della Sera, the former Rossoneri defender responded, challenging those suggestions, commenting: “If I look at my past, I can’t stop smiling.”
