While it is now guaranteed Italy will have five Champions League teams next season, it could go up to six, for a maximum of 10 teams in European competition.

The passage to the semi-finals of Atalanta, Roma and Fiorentina helped secure the mathematical certainty of a top two place in the UEFA rankings, which means Italy will get an extra place in the new and expanded Champions League in 2024-25.

However, that is not the end of the good news.

It is possible to see six Serie A sides in the Champions League, because whoever wins the Europa League also gains automatic access to the tournament.

So if Atalanta or Roma win the Europa League and also finish out of the top five, they will enter the Champions League too.

The even better news is that even if these sides finish fifth in Serie A, they still get the bonus spot in the Champions League, with the sixth-placed team getting bumped up.

However, if Roma or Atalanta win the Europa League and finish fourth, there will only be the five Italian teams in the Champions League.

As things stand, the top five go into the Champions League, sixth and seventh the Europa League, plus eighth into the Conference League.

However, there is a scenario where Italy could get up to 10 teams in UEFA tournaments next season.

If Fiorentina win the Conference League, they are automatically entered into the Europa League next term.

So if they finish out of the top eight and lift the trophy, then it will get an extra slot.

If Roma or Atalanta win the Europa League and finish out of the top eight – which admittedly would be remote – plus Fiorentina win the Conference League, it would therefore add two extra slots and take the number of qualified teams up to 10.

Considering Serie A has only 20 clubs, that would be half of the top flight.
