Newcastle United have issued a brief statement acknowledging the FA charges made against Italy international Sandro Tonali for betting offences committed between August and October of 2023.

The former Milan midfielder was handed a 10-month suspension and a €20,000 fine by the FIGC, the Italian football federation, in October 2023 for bets that he had placed on football while still living in Italy. The ban was later extended worldwide by FIFA.

The FA charges relate to 50 reported offences between August and October of 2023, after Tonali’s €80m move from Milian to Newcastle last summer.

Tonali made 12 appearances for Newcastle before his 10-month ban came into effect, scoring on his Premier League debut against Aston Villa.

He is currently expected to return to competitive action on August 27, 2024.

Newcastle club statement

Newcastle were unable to provide too much insight into Tonali’s situation while investigations are still ongoing.

The club wrote on their official website: “Newcastle United acknowledges a misconduct charge received by Sandro Tonali in respect of alleged breaches of FA Betting Rules.

“Sandro continues to fully comply with relevant investigations and he retains the club’s full support.

“Due to this ongoing process, Sandro and Newcastle United are unable to offer further comment at this time.”
