Named after Novara legend and Italy’s 1938 World Cup winner Silvio Piola, the stadium was inaugurated on January 18 1976, ending their 44-year spell at the Alcarotti arena. Up until September 2010 the 10,112 capacity was reduced to just 7,500 due to safety regulations, but the restructuring work not only brought those areas up to code, it also introduced commentary boxes for television and the first synthetic pitch used by a professional Italian club.

The field was chosen because the humid and often freezing climate of Piedmont continually thwarted attempts to keep grass in good condition. It adds to the unique atmosphere of the Stadio Piola and can take some getting used to for visiting players. The stadium is served by the 3 and 7 bus lines from the train station.
