Stefano Pioli is preparing for an important game in his Milan journey, sitting just behind club legend Nils Liedholm for successes in the dugout.

Despite guiding the Rossoneri to their first Scudetto in a decade back in the 2021-22 season, doubts have continued to circle the Italian coach over the last two years, with many fans frustrated at the team’s inability to keep up with Napoli last term and Inter this year.

Pioli is still contracted to Milan to June 2025 and it’s unclear if he’ll continue in the dugout next season or if a change will be made. Possible candidates to replace the 58-year-old include Antonio Conte, Roberto De Zerbi and Thiago Motta.

Page five of today’s Gazzetta dello Sport details how Pioli has picked up 127 wins in charge of Milan, just one less than club legend Liedholm, who secured 128 across his three spells in charge.

The Italian coach has averaged a far better win rate, securing victory in 55.46% of games compared to the Swede’s 45.71% average.

Ahead of the pair in Milan’s all-time rankings are Fabio Capello with 161 wins, Giuseppe Viani with 203, Carlo Ancelotti with 238 and Nereo Rocco with 243.

  1. Number of wins, win percentages and length of time spent on the bench are all irrelevant in the wider context of things when you’re the coach of Milan. What matters is winning the league and challenging in Europe.
