Inter star Nicolò Barella is ‘one of the best midfielders in the world’ according to ex-Juventus legend Claudio Marchisio.

Barella was named captain of Italy for the first time in Sunday’s 2-0 friendly win over Ecuador and celebrated it by scoring with a fantastic lob on the counter-attack late on.

“He is continuing to improve, despite the fact he is already at a very high level, and is confirming his status as one of the best midfielders in the world,” Marchisio told Radio Serie A.

“The goal the other day against Ecuador is the proof that he keeps a cool head, which is something that stands champions apart.

“Being able to stop and make extraordinary moves like that is rare.”

Barella already impressed last season when helping Inter to reach the Champions League Final, as well as win the Coppa Italia and Supercoppa Italiana.

His team is on track to win the Serie A title this season, sitting 14 points clear of second-placed Milan.
