Heartbreak for Fiorentina, who beat Bayern Munich 3-2 with a Stevan Jovetic brace, but go out on away goals. Ultimately that contested Miroslav Klose goal in Munich proved decisive.
The Viola were still seething after the 2-1 defeat in Germany, as the winning goal was several yards offside. Massimo Gobbi was also harshly sent off, but still handed a three-match ban. With Alessandro Gamberini and Adrian Mutu also out, Juan Manuel Vargas and Cristiano Zanetti passed fitness tests to start with Felipe used at left-back. Franck Ribery recovered from his injury, though Martin Demichelis and Diego Contento were sidelined.
It had been snowing and was very windy in Florence, but the club had taken precautions to ensure it did not stick. It was difficult for both teams to adapt early on, as even free kicks became troublesome because the wind was moving the ball.
Vargas tried to take advantage of the conditions by thumping a free kick from 30 metres that dipped just over the bar. Per Kroldrup and Thomas Muller had a nasty clash of heads, but were able to continue.
Hans-Jorg Butt intercepted a dangerous Vargas cross for Alberto Gilardino, while moments later Holger Badstuber blocked a Gila backheel flick from six yards that was again set up by the Peruvian.
Bastian Schweinsteiger was booked for slapping out a hand to strike Stevan Jovetic behind him, a not entirely dissimilar move to the one that saw Gobbi sent off in the first leg.
Fiorentina broke through after 27 minutes. Marco Marchionni unleashed a screamer from 30 metres that Butt parried at the near post, but Vargas pounced to chip it into the far top corner from the tightest of angles. With this result, the Viola would qualify on the away goals rule.
Bayern lost striker Mario Gomez to an injury, so Miroslav Klose came off the bench. There were penalty appeals on 33 minutes for a Daniel Van Buyten handling offence in the box, but the referee waved play on.
A lucky ricochet sent Arjen Robben clear on goal, but Sebastien Frey managed an extraordinary reaction save to tip it over the bar from nine yards at the near post with one hand.
Marchionni ran on to a loose ball and fell under a challenge, but immediately got back up and continued without appealing for a potential spot-kick. Bayern had a good period of pressure before half-time and Muller's diving header was over.
Straight after the restart Marchionni whipped in a surprise cross along the byline for Gilardino, deflected wide at the near post. Vargas fired off target after an inspired through ball.
Fiorentina should've made it 2-0 on 50 minutes! Marchionni's cross somehow squirmed past two Bayern players and reached Gilardino, but the striker fired straight at Butt from point-blank range.
Moments later Cesare Natali's error let Muller into the box, but Per Kroldrup managed to scramble back for a perfectly-timed tackle.
The Tuscans did double their lead soon after with a well-worked move. Gilardino brilliantly backheeled a Marchionni cross for the on-rushing Jovetic behind him to place an angled drive into the far bottom corner.
Robben's strange chipped free kick was gratefully smothered by Frey before any Bayern players could get a toe to it.
Another wonderful Kroldrup sliding tackle charged down Klose's shot as he pulled the trigger after running on to a through ball.
Bayern were pouring on the pressure now and Lorenzo De Silvestri lost possession. Muller dummied a Ribery low cross from the left for Mark Van Bommel to hit a precise daisy-cutter from 20 metres that beat Frey at the near post.
It was now all-square on aggregate and in terms of away goals. Bayern wanted to take advantage and Ribery blasted over.
However, it left them open to the counter and Fiorentina made it 3-1 with Jovetic. The Montenegrin gathered in midfield and ran forward, his deflected effort was knocked back down by Gilardino's header for Jovetic to nutmeg the goalkeeper from seven yards.
Not even 60 seconds had passed when Bayern scored a potentially decisive second away goal. Frey could do absolutely nothing, as Robben shrugged off defenders to smash an unstoppable left-foot blockbuster into the top corner from 25 metres.
Fiorentina now had to score in order to qualify. Muller was stopped for a very tight offside decision, while Zanetti ballooned over and Gilardino put the ball in the net when clearly offside.
Frey flapped away a dangerous corner and then punched at a free kick that took a strange dip. Manuel Pasqual replaced the more defensive Felipe and the exhausted Vargas made way for Keirrison.
A well-worked team move saw Pasqual pull back, but it was behind Gilardino and Keirrison in the middle of the penalty area. There was a similar incident at the other end, as Robben's shot was deflected to roll inches past Klose's outstretched boot.
Kroldrup again timed his tackle on Robben perfectly in the area, as Fiorentina swarmed all over Bayern and were open to the counter. Ribery had to be told to leave the pitch for a substitution and even accompanied by the referee, as Bayern started time-wasting in stoppages.
