Europa League Gp G, Matchday 1 - 17/9/09 (20.00 UK)
Lazio 1 - 2 Salzburg
Foggia 59 (L), Scheimer 82 (S), Janko 93 (S)
Stadio Olimpico

Lazio shot themselves in the foot with two howlers, as after Pasquale Foggia's opener they capitulated 2-1 to Salzburg in stoppages.

The Biancocelesti suffered their first defeat of the season against Juventus at the weekend, so hoped to get right back on track. Mauro Zarate was fit again and started with support from Julio Cruz and Mourad Meghni.

The game took a while to kick into gear at the Stadio Olimpico, as Lazio passed the ball around without really making an impact early on. The first chance was after 20 minutes, when Albano Bizzarri dealt with a Leitgeb left-foot shot.

Soon after Lazio had their scoring opportunity with Cruz's left-foot strike testing goalkeeper Gustafson.

However, Emilson Sanchez Cribari nearly scored an own goal when he slashed at Svento's cross, turning it just past the post. Salzburg also had penalty appeals, as Roberto Baronio came into contact with Janko.

Pasquale Foggia replaced Ousmane Dabo at the break to inject a bit more pace and creativity into the side. Prague continued to push, though, as Pokrivac fired a free kick over the target.

The home side finally settled into a rhythm with new man Foggia making the difference. He surged forward and flashed a right-foot angled drive across the face of goal. Moments later Zarate tested the goalkeeper's reflexes.

Another 120 seconds and the two had combined, Foggia threading through for the Argentine to skim the woodwork with his right foot.

The pressure was building and a goal seemed inevitable, just as the name of its scorer. Foggia transformed the game and broke the deadlock with a marvellous angled drive struck with his sweet left foot.

Stefano Mauri came off the bench and made the mistake of urging the referee to book an opponent, getting himself carded in the process. Zarate again forced Gustafsson into a save, but a defensive error proved costly.

In the final stages Bizzarri collided with teammate Mobido Diakhite, allowing the grateful Scheimer to tap into an empty net.

Zarate was booked for simulation and Baronio drilled off target, but it got even worse in stoppages! Another disastrous defensive error, this time Cribari's wayward header, gifted Janko with the winner for Salzburg.
