Lecce outrage as Diamoutene attacked

There was outrage in Lecce this afternoon when fans staged a protest during the training session, hurling abuse at Souleymane Diamoutene.

The Salentini have slipped down to penultimate place and this week Coach Gigi De Canio's offer of resignation was rejected.

Tension escalated at the Calimera training ground today when a group of around 10 ultras surrounded Diamoutene and demanded he take off the Lecce shirt.

They singled him out because he used to play for arch rivals Bari, but also hurled racist abuse at the Mali international and tried to take off the jersey by force.

“There was a very serious incident including odious racist insults,” read a statement from the Players' Association (AIC).

“We express total solidarity for Diamoutene, who was singled out for having worn the Bari jersey in the past.

“The AIC hopes once again that the Federation and the Lega Calcio express their strong stance against such behaviour and take significant action.”
