Giuseppe Rossi has admitted that he is attracted by the idea of playing for Napoli, but insists he is staying with Villarreal for now.
Rossi had been seriously targeted by Juventus this summer before his Spanish club decided to keep hold of him.
However, his future was again cast into some doubt on Tuesday after winning the praise of Napoli owner Aurelio De Laurentiis.
"I'm happy with what the President said," the Italian international told Sky Sport Italia.
"I don't deny the fact that playing in a place like Naples would be good, but I'm happy in Spain for the time being.
"We'll see what happens in the future."
De Laurentiis yesterday confirmed that he did make an enquiry for the former Manchester United player in the past.
"Although Walter Mazzarri wants a small squad, I did call Rossi and Villarreal a while back," confirmed the San Paolo chief.
"We got to know each other on the phone. He was born in America and doesn't know Naples well, so I explained to him what it means to play for Napoli. He didn't say no.
"That was a month ago and he hasn't called me back, but I will call him now. I also proposed a transfer in January. Rossi is a nice boy and said he was honoured by this interest.
"I am ready to go back on the charge for this player."
