Roma have turned their attention to Pablo Daniel Osvaldo after failing in their attempts to net Nilmar.
The Villarreal forward was targeted by sporting director Walter Sabatini, but his Spanish club's asking price was considered as too steep.
As a result, the Giallorossi have reportedly switched their focus to Osvaldo, a striker who caught the eye at Espanyol last season.
Osvaldo, born in Argentina, is actually an Italian Under-21 international who has played in the peninsula before.
The forward, 25, had spells at Atalanta, Lecce, Fiorentina and Bologna before his January 2010 move to La Liga.
Roma are reportedly ready to offer money and Fabio Simplicio in a deal worth around €18m for the player who has also caught the eye of Atletico Madrid this summer.
The Italian outfit are looking for a new forward player after Mirko Vucinic was sold to Juventus for €15m.
