Players' strike still on the table

The President of the Players' Association has warned “the Serie A season will start” only when the collective bargaining contract is signed.

The AIC have warned the opening weekend of the campaign on August 27-28 could be postponed due to strike action.

“The Serie A season will start only when everything has been resolved,” AIC President Damiano Tommasi told Radio Sportiva.

“We are still in the same position as we were before. There is a meeting planned with the Lega on August 19.”

The Lega – a union of the 20 Serie A clubs – are refusing to sign the collective bargaining contract, prompting the players to threaten strike action.

“There is some movement behind the scenes to find a solution to the problem. The economic factors do not play a part in the position the players are taking.

“The collective bargaining contract expired on June 30 and we had a precise agreement with the Lega. The sticking point is not about money, but rather the rights to train with their teammates.”

The AIC wants to prevent clubs freezing players out of the squad during contract disputes.
