Christian Panucci is concerned that Roma will continue to struggle after last night's shock 1-0 loss at Slovan Bratislava.
The Giallorossi are at the start of a new era after the club were bought by an American consortium, but they kicked off their European campaign with a defeat.
"They'll begin the championship with a lot of insecurities," Panucci, who spent eight years with the outfit, told Sky Sport Italia.
"They lost to a modest side yesterday, even if they have the ability to turn things around in the second leg next week.
"They're definitely suffering from what has happened over the summer the change of ownership, the many uncertainties on purchases and over who is sold, on the Coach who is slowly trying to build a team, but it is clear that they are missing players.
"This new air inside Trigoria has yet to appear. The team is still undecided and they are finding it hard to play in the way requested."
New boss Luis Enrique caused some controversy last night when he started both Francesco Totti and Marco Borriello on the bench.
"I already said last year that I think Totti and Borriello struggle to play together, I might be wrong, but this is my idea," added the former Italian international defender.
"You can play in any way you want, even play like Barcelona, but they are two players who have similar characteristics and they don't go together.
"One of them will probably be left out when Erik Lamela is available."
