Roma owner Thomas Di Benedetto has apparently backed Francesco Totti ahead of Coach Luis Enrique. “We need him on the pitch.”
There is tension in the Giallorossi camp after Totti was only fielded for the final 15 minutes of a 1-0 Europa League defeat to Slovan Bratislava.
“Totti is an extraordinary player, the greatest of the last 50 years,” American investor Di Benedetto told the Corriere dello Sport.
“He is already part of Roma's history and is a fundamental element for us. Above all, we need him on the pitch.”
It is a clear message to Enrique, who benched the captain for the first official game of the season.
Roma must now overturn that 1-0 first leg defeat or be left out of Europe.
“We are tracking several players, but this result certainly won't modify our transfer strategy. Unfortunately we have to move within certain limits and this affects our reinforcement campaign.
“I spoke to the team before the Slovan game, but that is not my job. I have a lot of faith in director Walter Sabatini and Coach Enrique. It is their duty to talk to the players.”
