New Palermo Coach Devis Mangia was promoted from the youth team and debuts against Inter, but “I don't feel like a caretaker.”
The Sicilians sacked Stefano Pioli this week, just days before the Serie A season begins, but Delio Rossi and Claudio Ranieri turned down the job. Youth team Coach Mangia was therefore pushed on to the main bench.
“I certainly don't feel like a caretaker manager, as otherwise I'd be working with the wrong spirit,” said the 37-year-old.
“I feel the respect of the club, the President and directors. I was in the right place at the right time when these circumstances aligned.”
Mangia has a big test for his first game, as Inter come to the Stadio Barbera next weekend.
“We are working on the 4-4-2 system, but there are still many players away on international duty. Before making definitive choices, I want to get a real grip on their characteristics.
“I was given a warm welcome by everyone, both the younger players and the ‘senators.' Am I afraid? I have the best job in the world, so why should I be afraid?”
