There are fears Alberto Gilardino could be out for several weeks, if not months, with a knee injury.
The Fiorentina and Italy striker fell awkwardly in a collision with Samir Handanovic during this afternoon's 2-0 defeat to Udinese.
Replays immediately showed that the left knee bent backwards, as his studs were caught in the turf when he made contact with the goalkeeper.
Gilardino was in evident agony when stretchered off the field and could be out for several months if ligament damage is confirmed.
He was also filmed leaving the Stadio Friuli in an ambulance so he could go to a local hospital for tests.
