Alberto Gilardino will be out for six weeks, but admits he was afraid the knee injury would be much worse. “I was so scared.”
The Fiorentina striker collided with Udinese goalkeeper Samir Handanovic during Sunday's 2-0 defeat at the Stadio Friuli.
Replays show his knee bent backwards in the impact and his screams of pain suggested many months on the sidelines could be ahead of him.
However, today Fiorentina medical staff announced Gilardino will be out of action for around five to six weeks with a micro fracture of the tibia.
“The test results gave me a big sigh of relief this morning,” confessed the Italian international.
“Fortunately it was less serious than we thought. The pain was horrendous and I was so scared, but the medical staff have reassured me.
“I want to thank all the fans, colleagues and everyone who in this time showed me incredible affection. We'll see each other on the field soon.”
