Cesare Prandelli criticised Italy for not pushing hard enough for the second goal in their Serbia draw.
“It wasn't easy and we tried to always play football, sometimes over-doing it, but the lads were very smart and concentrated,” the Coach told RAI after their 1-1 result in Belgrade.
Claudio Marchisio had broken the deadlock after 56 seconds, but Branislav Ivanovic snatched an equaliser before the break.
“When the team plays the way it does in the opening 20 minutes, it has to go for the second goal. We were ‘content' with fancy footwork and nothing more.
“The midfield had to do a certain type of work, as we wanted to spread the play wide rather than go through the middle and did it well.
“Obviously with little time, the new players have to wait a little bit and have patience.”
The Azzurri were already qualified for Euro 2012 anyway and remain unbeaten going into Tuesday's final match.
“We want to win against Northern Ireland in Pescara and impress with good football.”
Estonia fought back from a goal down to win 2-1 in Northern Ireland this evening, meaning it's a battle with Serbia to the end for that play-off spot. Serbia will qualify with a point in Slovenia.
