Riccardo Montolivo reveals what he was thinking when wasting Italy's chance to win in Serbia. “I wasn't clear-headed enough.”
The Azzurri drew 1-1 in Belgrade, but had a great opportunity when the Fiorentina midfielder opted to pass rather than shoot.
“I wasn't clear-headed enough, without doubt. My teammates also told me it would've been better to go for the shot, but I wasn't entirely aware of where I was and how much time I had on the ball, so preferred to pass it.
“Serbia kept the midfield compact and it was difficult for me to find my place between the lines. In the second half the Coach asked me to play a bit more towards the right so we could cause problems for Aleksandar Kolarov.
“Undoubtedly we went out on to the pitch to win, but as the game developed we can be happy with the point.
“Despite our great start and early goal, Serbia continued to play the ball and push hard. I think overall we had a good game against a tough opponent who needed points to get the play-off place, so we can be happy with the result.
“We expected Serbia to show quality and grit, which proved to be the case, but we replied blow for blow.”
Montolivo was asked to list his predictions for the upcoming Euro 2012 tournament.
“Spain without doubt are the favourites along with Germany, then the others – including Italy – just behind.”
