Walter Mazzarri has no intention of playing catenaccio in Munich. “Napoli want to impose our football on Bayern.”
The Partenopei were the first team to take points off Bayern Munich, and score a goal against them, in the Champions League during their 1-1 draw at the San Paolo.
“They are an incredibly strong side with five candidates for the Ballon d'Or and can afford astronomic fees on the transfer market,” said Coach Mazzarri.
“We need a perfect game and for them to make a few mistakes. We are giving our all in every game and come here with a relaxed state of mind. After all, this is the first Champions League experience for our city and just being here against one of the strongest teams in the world is already a success.”
Having said that, Mazzarri has absolutely no intention of shutting up shop to look for a point in Germany.
“We studied a few things from the first game on how to adjust our tactics, but I want to underline we have quite a few injuries. Goran Pandev will be on the bench despite the fact he's not 100 per cent, while Fernandez replaces Paolo Cannavaro.
“I expect the kind of performance we put in away to Manchester City,” said Mazzarri of the impressive 1-1 result.
“When the draw was made, everyone said we'd go out straight away, yet here we are challenging for qualification. For the moment we are unexpectedly in second place, so whatever we do from now on will be an historic achievement.
“I have to drum it into my players' heads that they must try to get a result against anyone, in any stadium. For the past two years Napoli have imposed their football on the opponent and tomorrow we'll discover if we can do that to Bayern as well. After all, we know that we can defend and counter-attack at pace when necessary.”
Mazzarri had a closing message for Antonio Cassano, who is in hospital with a mystery illness. The two worked together at Sampdoria.
“I wish Antonio the best, as I am very close to him at this moment. There are things far more important than football.”
