Zambrotta wants Italy recall

Milan veteran Gianluca Zambrotta has surprisingly stated that he hopes to be a part of Italy’s Euro 2012 squad.

The 34-year-old has played just once for his country since the 2010 World Cup, but he hasn’t given up his dream of wearing the Azzurri shirt again.

“I’ve won 98 caps for Italy and one day I hope to reach the 100 mark,” the left-back told Sport Mediaset.

“That would be an important achievement.

“For now all I can do is try to give my very best for Milan when Massimiliano Allegri picks me in the team. Then I just have to hope…”

Zambrotta, who was selected by Cesare Prandelli for the abandoned Euro 2012 qualifier against Serbia, made his Italy debut in a February 1999 0-0 draw with Norway.

The former Como, Bari and Juventus player added that he still has massive ambitions at club level too.

“I’m missing the Champions League trophy,” he continued. “That is the most important Cup at club level that I haven’t been able to win.

“I went close with Juventus in 2003…

“I hope to be able to lift that trophy before the end of my career. Actually, it would be nice if we could win it this season.”
