Riccardo Montolivo urges Italy to “take the positives” from a defeat that played into Uruguay’s hands.
“There are regrets because we played well in both halves and Uruguay did well to score early on. That allowed them to do what they wanted, which was sit behind the ball,” he said of the 1-0 result in Rome.
“I think it went pretty well and it is just a shame we were unable to get the ball in the back of the net. We need to improve, we knew that, but there are regrets.
“Uruguay were superior because of the result, but certainly not in terms of overall performance, so we have to take the positives from tonight.”
Italy were unbeaten on home soil since a 2-0 friendly to Croatia in Livorno on August 16, 2006.
