Oriali: Why I left Inter…

Italian 1982 World Cup winner Gabriele Oriali says he still doesn’t know why he was shown the door by Inter in the summer of 2010.

Oriali, who appeared for Inter and Fiorentina during his playing career, spent 11 years with the Nerazzurri as a club official before his shock exit.

“I’m not aware of the real reasons why I was released,” the 59-year-old told the Gazzetta dello Sport on Wednesday.

“After 30 years at Inter I thought that I had earned some respect and credibility. However, I was kicked out and I don’t know why. I just know because of whom…

“After Jose Mourinho left the club, President Massimo Moratti was allowed to be convinced by Marco Branca and some other directors of a project that didn’t include me.

“I’ve spoken with Moratti both before and after I left. He even said some nice things about me on TV a few days ago.

“Perhaps, with time, he’s understood a few things, but he evidently couldn’t take a step backwards.”

Oriali was part of the staff when the Nerazzurri won five Scudetti, three Italian Cups, three Italian Super Cups and the Champions League.

In December 2010 Oriali was offered a job by Bologna, but rejected it.
