Best and worst of Serie A 2011

Which clubs have earned the most points, scored the most goals and had the best defence in Serie A across the calendar year of 2011?

Constructing a hypothetical table that looks at League performance from games played in Serie A across 2011 only, a number of interesting statistics are revealed.

Milan expectedly top this imaginary table with 80 points earned from 37 games played, closely followed by Inter on 79 and then Udinese on 75.

Whilst the Rossoneri currently share top spot with Juventus after 16 games of 2011-12, in this 2011-only table, the Bianconeri rank in sixth, having collected 61 points over the calendar year, behind Napoli in fifth and Lazio in fourth.

Inter lead the way for the most goals scored in Serie A from January to December with 71, but benefit from having played two extra fixtures in this period that yielded five extra goals. Milan are high scorers from the list of teams to have played 37 games in the year, with Udinese and Napoli close behind on 64 and 62 respectively.

Again Francesco Guidolin’s side are second only to Massimiliano Allegri’s when it comes to defensive aptitude. Il Diavolo have kept a massive 21 clean sheets this year - one ahead of Udinese - and conceded the fewest number of goals with 27 - four fewer than Udinese.

At the other end of the table, from those that have played all of 2011 in Serie A, Lecce have collected the fewest points with 35, followed by Bologna on 39 and Cesena on 40.

With the fewest number of wins this year, Lecce also have the leakiest defence having shipped 65 goals - followed closely by Palermo on 61 - whilst the Salentini have also kept the joint-fewest number of clean sheets with seven, alongside Catania.

Perhaps most interesting is Chievo’s performance. Whilst a total of 45 points collected this past 12 months is expected, the Mussi Volanti’s 39 goals conceded and 15 clean sheets are both statistics only bettered by Milan, Udinese and Lazio. Counter-balancing such excellent defensive credentials, though, is their record in front of goal. No team scored fewer than Chievo’s 32 goals, or failed to score in as many as Chievo’s 17 matches this year.

Notes

- Inter played two extra League games - against Fiorentina and Cesena - as a result of their participation in the FIFA Club World Cup forcing the postponement of the original fixtures in late 2010.

- Genoa played an extra game in 2011, after their mid-December 2010 derby with Sampdoria was postponed to due adverse weather.

- Bari, Brescia, Sampdoria, Atalanta, Novara and Siena not included in the study due to participation in only one half of the year’s fixtures.
