Giuseppe Sannino dedicated Siena’s historic climb into the Coppa Italia semi-final to “the players and our fans.”
The club had never even reached the quarters before now, but earned a shock 1-0 win away to Chievo despite playing the last half-hour with 10 men.
“I am happy for the players and our fans who followed us all the way here, as they really believed in us,” said the Coach.
“Having said all that, I’d like to be even happier at the end of the season by celebrating Siena’s Serie A safety.
“We suffered today and were missing some connections between players who haven’t really worked together as much, but we had to make changes ahead of Sunday’s very important derby with Fiorentina.”
It has been a remarkable journey for Robur, who started in August and along the way knocked out Torino, Cagliari, Palermo and now Chievo.
“We started this Coppa Italia by using those who had not played as much and yet here we are,” continued Sannino.
“Those who set foot on the field proved they are worthy of Siena. Paolo Grossi’s red card made life more difficult for us today, but also confirmed we know how to play even with 10 men. It really wasn’t the kind of gesture he usually makes.
“Mattia Destro is an extraordinary lad and he knows what I want from him: to see him grow.”
Siena will face the winners of Napoli-Inter in the two-legged semi-final next month.
