It’s reported Gianfranco Zola held a meeting with Lazio today and will only accept the post once the club has clarified its position with Edy Reja.
It is still not clear who will be at the helm for Sunday evening’s game with Fiorentina, as Reja tended his written resignation on Wednesday and was expected to leave.
However, Reja took control of today’s training session and pointed out he had received no news from the club, so “until I am told anything, I will continue my work out of respect for the players and fans.”
A planned press conference this afternoon was postponed indefinitely and it was never announced who was meant to be speaking to the media.
Nonetheless, a group of journalists have gathered in the press room and are waiting to see what – if anything – happens.
Numerous reports suggest former West Ham United manager Zola flew in to Rome this morning and had a long meeting with President Claudio Lotito.
Zola has now become the favourite ahead of Gigi De Canio, who agreed a deal with the club on Friday night.
It is rumoured that Zola will only accept the post if the club first clarifies the situation with Reja, as he worked with the Coach at Cagliari in 2003-04 and does not wish to offend him.
It’s possible Zola would only sign a contract on Monday, so at this rate is seems as if Reja will be on the bench for one final game against Fiorentina.
